My Day with Mats Wilander

Posted on May 29, 2011 by PTFC

On a recent Sunday morning, I had a lot of fun participating in the Mats Wilander On Wheels (WOW) tennis clinic at Edgemoor Club in Bethesda. The former 7 time Grand Slam Champion (8 if you count doubles) tours around the US in an RV, sets up at local facilities and puts on a show!

The event began with a juniors clinic at 9, I went on the court at 11, and the advanced players started at 1:30 pm after lunch. Mats and his two partners worked with 4 players on each court, we rotated every 20 minutes for different drills and coaching tips, and got a great 90 minute workout.

Following the clinics was a celebrity death match doubles game with Mats and his partner Mikael Pernfors a former top 10 in the world from Sweden and French Open finalist against the club pro and Richey Reneberg who was former Number 1 in the world in doubles. A cocktail reception followed.

Though I can’t say I’m playing significantly better (everything Mats & team told me I’ve heard
about 20 times from the Potomac pro’s, I guess I’m a slow learner), I can say it was a great time and excellent experience. Mat’s was charming and a true professional. John McDaniel is working on setting up this clinic in September at Potomac, hope he can make it happen!
